The HyAI (Hydrogen Artificial Intelligence) venture, financed by Innovate UK as well as the Sustainable Innovation Fund, is a pilot demonstration of hydrogen storage technology powered by AI software. HyAI will demonstrate how hydrogen hardware-integrated software can make smart, data-driven asset management choices in real-time and maximize the incorporation of renewable energy into the United Kingdom electricity grid.
The project has incorporated an advanced AI software framework with one of the firm’s hydrogen storage systems, driven by London-centered H2GO Power, manufacturers of the low-pressure hydrogen energy storage as well as AI-driven asset software solutions. The AI platform, which tests the device using the energy data provided by EMEC from its Orkney hydrogen production facility, functions as an energy management software, combining weather, electricity prices as well as grid management data. It then uses AI predictive algorithms to interpret this information to optimize storage systems’ operation by forecasting potential power costs and consumer demands. The Computer Science Department of Imperial College London helps HyAI with data management and modeling.
Initial findings have shown that the AI-enabled solution can generate hydrogen in a much more cost-effective manner while also contributing to relieve pressures on the national grid, with the HyAI project demo continuing and living until summer 2021. This has the capacity to enhance power reliability, enable higher renewable energy penetration, and accelerate the transition to a zero-net emission economy.
The next moves are to promote a commercial demo of H2GO Power’s AI software system as well as the power-to-power hydrogen storage technology, constructing on this project. Towards this end, H2GO agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the EMEC for the potential implementation and integration of the technology at EMEC’s Orkney testing facility. The first energy storage system that retains renewable energy on request as an unpressurized solid-state-hydrogen, combined with the AI software application, will pilot this exciting partnership.
