The top-rated startup company unveiled radar satellite imagery on December 16, 2020. The images, which have a resolution of 50 centimeters by 50 centimeters, are unbelievably clear and one of a kind. Capella Space, a space company, was founded by Payam Banazadeh. The guru is a former engineer at NASA, where he worked in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Capella Space initially wanted to launch its imagery satellite, Sequoia, on an Indian rocket. When the mission was postponed, Capella Space launched Sequoia with SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
According to Banazadeh, the released images are the highest resolution images available from a commercial satellite operator. The satellite uses 20 to 60 seconds to capture images, but 20 seconds works best. In its four years of operation, the company is trying to establish Constellation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites. These satellites will provide reliable and constant global imagery. Useful data from the imagery will be an asset to government agencies and private customers. The Sequoia satellite was launched in August 2020. A Rocket Lab Electron was used to place the satellite, alongside nine others, into the earth’s orbit.
So far, no other company can produce a 50 by 50-centimeter resolution image. This makes Capella Space one of the most sought after Space Imagery Company. “No one else can do the 50-centimeter square pixels natively”, said Banazadeh, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer. It is currently the highest-resolution private SAR satellite in the entire world.
There is a very tight competition among SAR companies to produce excellent imagery. The demand is even higher among government agencies for SAR data. A great company is expected to produce high-quality images regardless of the time of the day or the weather. Darkness and clouds interfere with imagery. Satellites that can surpass these obstacles are on demand. The Capella Space Sequoia satellite provides this. Currently, private companies can easily sell data to potential customers. These satellite images are not an exception. However, images with better resolution than 50 by 50 centimeters are closely regulated. The US regulations become more stringent with high-resolution images. Thus, Capella Space is working towards upgrading its imagery.
Capella Space is planning to launch more satellites soon. These satellites will enable the company to collect data from literally anywhere on earth. The images will provide solutions to problems such as gauging the spread of forest fires and monitoring deforestation. Commercial customers and governments can fully rely on such technology to provide data that will help with geographical problems as well as humanitarian concerns. Before the launch in August, Capella Space put effort into developing the infrastructure of its satellites. This is an automatic satellite that uses a system that links satellites on the orbit with ground networks.
